Dublin airport today faced a call to review its security after three planes were damaged by intruders overnight.

Gardaí are investigating the incident in which three private aircraft were sprayed with graffiti at the airport.

A Garda spokeswoman said the area was being examined but added: "The airworthiness of the aircraft was never an issue."

It is unclear how the intruders got to the planes and what the nature of the graffiti was.

Labour transport spokeswoman Roisin Shortall said the incident was of "great concern.

"I'm calling on the Dublin Airport Authority to undertake a full investigation," she said. "This incident was potentially very serious, and there is now an urgent need for a complete review of security at the airport."
