...the key issues
How many masts are there?
There are now 5,181 mobile phone sites in the Republic, a three-fold increase since 1999. Some of the sites are masts and others are antennae attached to buildings.
Why are there more masts?
A new operator, 3, is entering the market and needs 700 new sites. 3G technology also requires a lot more antennae to cover an area than standard technology.
Do masts generate radiation?
Mobile phone sites emit non-ionising radiation, which operates at much lower frequency levels than other types of radiation, such as X-rays.
Is this radiation harmful?
The most recent studies report no evidence of harm but they urge caution as there is evidence that exposure can cause subtle changes to human cells.
What about mobile handsets?
Despite widespread public protests against masts, people using handsets are exposed to more radiation.
What are the planning rules?
Planning permission is generally required for masts but it is often not for antennae attached to buildings. Guidelines urge firms not to place antennae near schools and hospitals
