BENGHAZI – Germany has recognised the rebel National Transitional Council as the legitimate representative of Libyans, a rebel official said yesterday during a visit by German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle.

Mr Westerwelle said Germany would support the council in creating a “democratic and constitutional Libya”, but did not refer to recognition.

At least five members of the European Union have recognised the council. Vice-chairman Abdel Hafiz Ghoga said: “He said that he came here to support the Libyan revolution, to support the national council. They believe it is the legitimate representation of the Libyan people.” – (Reuters)
