German police have freed two prison staff held hostage for several hours by inmates after storming a wing of a jail in eastern Germany.

The inmates, both serving long sentences and demanding their release, took three staff captive at the prison in the town of Naumburg yesterday afternoon.

One worker escaped soon afterwards, leaving a man and woman held hostage until early this morning.

No one was injured when police stormed the wing.

The prison holds almost 300 prisoners, all of them serving sentences of more than four years.
