The RTE broadcaster, Gay Byrne, was strongly criticised for his recent questioning of the relevance of the Defence Forces.

Mr Michael Finneran (FF) asked the House to condemn what he termed the uncalled-for attack on the Defence Forces, who had served the State with loyalty and dedication, by the RTE presenter. The attack had been unwarranted and irresponsible, maintained Mr Finneran, who urged that the Seanad leader, Mr Donie Cassidy, and the House should condemn it.

Responding to the call, Mr Cassidy said he was ready to make time available for a debate in support of the Defence Forces. He noted Mr Finneran's remarks regarding the broadcaster.
