Dozens of "old bangers' will form part of a cargo of waste leaving a Co Mayo offshore island today for scrapping and recycling.

As part of its Tidy Islands programme, 100 of the population on Clare Island will be collecting scrap vehicles, old cookers, washing machines, fridges and other metal goods for recycling on the mainland.

The project is being facilitated by Mayo County Council with a £1,000 grant.
