The search of a section of Dublin's Grand Canal will resume this morning after gardaí recovered the body of a man there yesterday.

The body was found during a search for two 18-year-old men who disappeared in Clondalkin in the early hours of Sunday morning.

David White from Carrickmore Avenue in Citywest and Shane Coughlan from Millpark in Clondalkin were last seen at about 4.30am on Sunday after they left a house in Clondalkin to visit an all-night shop.

Postmortem results are expected this morning on the body, which was found by Garda divers between the ninth and 11th lock of the canal near the Fonthill Road yesterday. The body was removed from the Grand Canal before lunchtime yesterday but gardaí had not formally identified it last night.

The search was launched on Tuesday evening after a boot, thought to belong to Mr White, had been found on the canal bank.

The body was taken to the Dublin City Morgue for a postmortem by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

A Garda spokeswoman said it was still unclear if the men's disappearance was suspicious. She said the pathology report, due this morning, would help to establish if malice was involved in the death.

"We don't know if we are dealing with suspicious deaths or just a tragic accident," she said.

The Garda Water Unit and a Garda divisional search team continued their search until 4.20pm yesterday. The area remained cordoned off yesterday evening and a crime scene investigation team from the Garda Technical Bureau worked at the scene.

Mr White's father Alan told one newspaper that a call had been made from David's phone to another son's phone just before 6.30am on Sunday, two hours after the men were last sighted. However, no message was left.

On Sunday afternoon, the families grew concerned at the young men's absence and contacted gardaí, who made a public appeal for information on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr White was wearing blue jeans, navy Timberland boots, a blue shirt and a light blue stripey top. Gardaí described him as being of slim build, 188cm tall, with short brown hair. He has a tattoo of a leprechaun on his upper right arm.

Mr Coughlan was wearing navy Adidas tracksuit bottoms, a striped jumper and a Von Dutch branded zip top.
