Gardaí are investigating two fatal stabbings in Dublin yesterday

Gardaí are investigating two fatal stabbings in Dublin yesterday. A 33-year-old man died in an incident in Kilmainham, Dublin, last night. When gardaí were called to a disturbance in Tyrone Place, Vincent Street West, just after 8pm, they discovered a man who was seriously injured.

He was pronounced dead after he was taken to St James's Hospital.

Earlier, a man was questioned about the fatal stabbing in the early hours of Tony McGrath (23) in the Blanchardstown area of Dublin. The man was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The 35-year-old man was arrested following the incident, which took place at Mr McGrath's home at Whitestown Walk, Whitestown, in the west Dublin suburb.

Three men had returned to the house after a Christening and, according to investigating detectives, "a disagreement broke out between the three men. There was a small altercation in the house and it developed into a bigger altercation outside."

The third man involved in the incident was trying to "peace keep" between the other two. The row continued for some time outside the house, when Mr McGrath was stabbed.

The emergency services were called and the victim received treatment at the scene before being moved to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, where he died from his injury shortly after 3am.

A postmortem examination carried out at the hospital by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy revealed that Mr McGrath died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Mr McGrath is survived by his girlfriend and young child, who lived at the house until recently.

The house remained sealed off by gardaí yesterday for forensic examination, and a number of weapons were recovered at the scene.

Throughout the day, gardaí came and went from the house, where a white Hiace van parked to the side of the house was also examined forensically.

Det Insp Brian Sherry of Blanchardstown Garda station appealed for anyone with information to contact the station incident room at 01-6667032.

He said the gardaí were "interested in talking to anyone who witnessed the incident or was in the area between one and two o'clock, or even back to 12.30am, and saw or heard anything that could be of use".

The 35-year-old man, who is also from the Blanchardstown area, was arrested under Section 4 of the 1984 Criminal Justice Act. He was held for questioning at Blanchardstown Garda station before being released at 6.30pm yesterday.

Mr McGrath had lived at the Whitestown Walk estate almost since it was built two-and-a-half years ago.

In a separate stabbing in Carlow, a man in his 20s was injured when a row broke out at about 2am yesterday in the town.

The victim, from eastern Europe, was moved to St James's Hospital in Dublin, where he was described last night as being in a stable condition.
