Gardaí in Cork want to interview a number of people in connection with an attack where a student sustained severe head injuries.

The 20-year-old Limerick man, a student of Cork Institute of Technology, is in a critical condition in Cork University Hospital after being assaulted in a laneway off Grand Parade in the city around 1 a.m.

A Garda Síochána forensic team has examined the scene of the incident and a major investigation headed by Supt Kieran McGann of Angleasea Street has been launched.

Another young man remains on a life support machine after another serious assault in the city three weeks ago. Mr Christian Scully (28) was attacked close to the scene of last night’s incident.
