Gardaí are to prepare a file for the DPP after questioning a man who was arrested about the death of a father of two in Cork last weekend.

Detectives arrested the 23-year-old man by arrangement at 9.15am yesterday when he presented at the Bridewell Garda station and questioned him about an assault on Cork City Council employee Patsy Deasy.

Mr Deasy (57), McGrath Park, Blackrock, was fatally assaulted as he was leaving a 60th birthday party with his wife at the Red Cove Inn in Mahon on Cork’s south side at about 12.30am last Saturday.

The man – who is from the Mahon area – was arrested for questioning for an assault offence and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows for detention of up to 24 hours.

The man was due to be released without charge last night and gardaí said they would prepare a file on the matter for the DPP.
