GARDAI in Monaghan are continuing searches in the Border area of the county following the discovery of weapon parts on Thursday.

The parts were located at an IRA training camp near Scotstown, which was originally uncovered in March.

Component parts for a machinegun, including a tripod some piping and a number of domestic gas cylinders adapted for mortar parts were found in a search of the remote woodland around Knockatallon on the border with Co Fermanagh.

Gardai who uncovered the training camp in March found a mortar firing range and an underground firing range, with thousands of spent ammunition shells.

Last month a second smaller rifle range was found about 300 metres from the first.

About 40 gardai are involved in the search, which is being led by Chief Supt Colm Rooney of Monaghan Garda station.
