Gardai are to begin early-morning patrols while postmen and milkmen deliver in the Southill area of Limerick, following a recent series of attacks, one of which left a postman comatose.
The injured postman has been taken off duties in the area. Another postman and a milkman were assaulted earlier this week. That postman had a gun pointed to his head some weeks ago. The move to provide patrols comes after a decision on Wednesday by postmen to suspend deliveries for the foreseeable future was overturned following a meeting organised by the Fianna Fail deputy city mayor, Alderman Peter Power. ail deputy city mayor, Alderman Peter Power, resolved the issue.
Mr Power said it was a very serious situation. "You had a postman beaten up after he was head-butted and had to get hospital treatment."
Two youths tried to steal goods from a parked milk-van as a milkman called into a shop at 11 a.m. last Tuesday in the O'Malley Park area. They made off with his jacket and keys.
