A female Garda was knocked down and injured by a car at a Co Monaghan border checkpoint in the early hours of this morning.

According to a Garda spokeswoman, shortly after 3.30 this morning a beige BMW passed through the checkpoint from the South into the North at Drumacon near Castleblaney.

It then returned to the checkpoint, failed to stop and hit the female guard, knocking her to the ground. It is believed the Northern-registered car reversed into the female Garda before driving away into the North.

She was taken to Monaghan General Hospital suffering from leg and hip injuries.

The injuries are not believed to be serious or life-threatening.

The injured Garda, who is normally stationed in Ballyfermot in Dublin, was working her first night on the border checkpoint set up as part of the operation against the spread foot-and-mouth disease from the North to the Republic.

Gardaí at Castleblaney are investigating the incident. A spokesman told ireland.comgardaí were following a "certain line of inquiry".

The whereabouts of the BMW is still unknown. It is believed it failed to stop another checkpoint earlier last night.
