The Garda has said it is happy with the response to their age ID scheme used nationwide aimed at curtailing underage drinking in pubs.

A spokesperson in the Garda's Community Policing office told ireland.com, since its inception in April 1999, over 35,000 applications for the card have been made.

In addition, the spokesperson said, an awareness camapign, which is now one year old has produced very positive results with bar owners in most parts of the country now requesting the card in cases where a customers age is in question.

The gardaí said that while they will be keeping vigilant later this week after the Leaving Cert results are published, they will not be increasing the numbers of officers on patrol and will restrict themselves to making sure revellers pose no danger to themselves or to other people.

"The main problem on the night of the Leaving Cert results is over-indulgence," a Garda spokesperson said.

"In general, the biggest danger is that some people will drink more than they are able and do themselves damage.

"Although we will be concentrating on specific areas of the city were young people congregate, we will not be increasing the number of Gardai on patrol."
