A Dublin Garda was arrested yesterday for an alleged firearms offence in connection with what is understood to have been a domestic dispute with a former girlfriend, writes Jim Cusack, Security Correspondent.

The garda was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act when he arrived for duty at a station in the city. This legislation is normally used only against terrorist or serious criminal suspects. The Act can be used to detain a person in connection with any alleged offence in which it is suspected that firearms have been used.

It is understood that the incident involved a domestic dispute involving the garda and his former girlfriend and members of her family. The officer was off duty at the time and it is understood that there were no serious injuries. He is understood to have denied the allegations.
