Sergio Garcia won the Sun City Golf Challenge on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off with Ernie Els at the Gary Player Country Club course today.

Garcia chipped in for birdie from the back fringe of the par-three 16th green to claim the $2 million first prize, while Els parred the hole.

Els and Garcia finished the regulation 72 holes at 20-under par 268 following respective final rounds of 69 and 63.

Garcia held a one-stroke lead over Els at 21-under par and playing the last. But the Spaniard bogeyed the hole when his second shot finished near the grandstand and in the right greenside rough, forcing the play-off.

Garcia began the round six shots adrift of Els's lead. He started his charge with a chip in for eagle at the third, but took the lead with a run of five birdies in six holes on the back nine amid a lightning delay of one hour and 24 minutes.

Garcia's bogey at 18 was the only blemish on his card.

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington finished eight shots off the pace on 12 under.
