Independent candidate Sean Gallagher has paid tribute to Michael D Higgins for coming out on top at the end of what he described as “an enduring campaign”.

Arriving at Dublin Castle with his wife Trish O’Connor, Mr Gallagher said the night was not about him but rather celebrating the victory of Mr Higgins.

“He has given a lifetime of service to this country and I know he will be an outstanding president,” Mr Gallagher said.

“I wish him well and he will have my support in anything I can do to help in his job of representing and supporting Ireland in the years ahead.”

Asked if he blamed Martin McGuinness - who raised questions about his involvement in Fianna Fáil fundraising activities earlier this week – for his drop from top of opinion polls to second in the vote, Mr Gallagher said “tonight is not a night for blame”.

“I congratulate the other six candidates for stepping forward. Ireland needs people to step forward for the presidency, for other roles in communities and that’s what it’s about now. It’s an example for everybody to step forward to help rebuild this country.”

Mr Gallagher would not say if he was disappointed with the outcome but stated that it was “the nature of campaigning”.

“I won’t take anything away from Michael D. This is his night,” he said.

Mr Gallagher said it was not yet the time to think about whether he would run for political office in the future. “Tonight is a night for reflecting on the campaign and mostly about celebration for our ninth president Michael D Higgins,” he said. “It has been an enduring campaign.”
