The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and GAA have agreed how to allocate funding for player welfare, paving the way for an annual Government grant of €5 million to be made available to intercounty players.

The funding offer first materialised last November on the back of the GPA's long-standing request for individual player grants but hit a stumbling block after the GAA and the GPA were unable to decide how it should be diverted.

"The agreement was reached following ongoing discussions between both parties," read a GAA statement this afternoon. "It has been submitted to the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism for consideration."
