Winter weather is expected to return tonight, with freezing temperatures, heavy frosts and some snow showers. Met Éireann said the cold snap would continue until mid-week at least, remaining bitterly cold through Wednesday night, Thursday and Thursday night.

Tonight is ecpected to be bitterly cold, with further wintry showers leading to snowfall accumulations in places and temperatures dropping to minus three degrees.

The forecaster said frost will form widely despite the blustery conditions, with icy stretches on untreated ground. A gale warning is also in place today, with west to northwest winds expected to reach gale force this evening and tonight on coasts from Roches Point to Valentia to Erris Head.

Temperatures are not expected to rise above 4-7 degrees tomorrow, but it will feel bitterly cold in the blustery west to northwest winds. Met Éireann predicted further wintry conditions over the next three days, with a risk of snow lying in places, especially in Connacht, Ulster and in west Munster.
