Gardai last night said the body of a young man, thought to be in his late teens, was recovered from the sea off Banna Strand near Tralee, Co Kerry. The Shannon Rescue Services and the Fenit lifeboat were alerted by a member of the public to the possibility that a swimmer had gone missing.

In Galway, a 22-year-old man drowned while swimming in the River Corrib near the UCG Corrib Village complex. A third man was drowned when his car went into the sea at Rossaveal, Co Galway.

Meanwhile, gardai in Cork have named a man who drowned in Cork Harbour on Tuesday as Mr Frank White of Passage West, Co Cork.
