Former soccer star Derek Dougan was fined £100 yesterday after his unsuccessful bid to become a Member of Parliament.

Former soccer star Derek Dougan was fined £100 yesterday after his unsuccessful bid to become a Member of Parliament.

Dougan (61) was not at Belfast Magistrates' Court when he was convicted of failing to make a return of his election expenses. In the 1997 General Election he stood as a cross-community independent candidate in East Belfast but lost his deposit after getting 541 votes.
