But the "stars and bars" looked too much like the Union's "stars and stripes" and was replaced in battle by the blue St Andrew's Cross on a red back ground with seven stars on each arm for the secessionist state. This is the Confederate Battle Flag, the flying of which is causing controversy in some southern states.
