A Galway man killed his wife a result of striking her in the and knocking her down the stairs of their home, a court heard yesterday.

John Godwin (47), of Glenbawn, Galway, was sentenced to five years in jail at Galway Circuit Court after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of his wife, Philomena, on July 23rd, 1993.

Mrs Godwin (45) had been talking to her daughter Barbara when her husband struck her and she lost unconscious after falling against a bannister.

Judge Harvey Kenny postponed the sentence for 12 months.
