Five men in court on IRA charges

Five Dublin men were charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court yesterday with IRA membership.

Five Dublin men were charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court yesterday with IRA membership.

They are Mr Thomas Gilson (22), Bawnlea Avenue, Jobstown, Tallaght; Mr Patrick Brennan (38), Lindisfarne Avenue, Clondalkin; Mr Sean O'Donnell (30), Castle Drive, Sandymount; Mr Stephen Birney (28), Conquerhill Road, Clontarf; and John Troy (20), Donard Avenue, Dublin.

They were each charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on October 11th.

The court heard evidence from Special Branch detectives that they arrested the five men at Convent Avenue, outside Bray Garda Station on Friday afternoon.

All had earlier been in custody at Bray Garda Station after their arrest for alleged theft.

The men were remanded in custody until Wednesday.
