Five people, including two non-nationals, were killed in accidents on Irish roads over the weekend. Another person was last night in a serious condition in hospital in what was one of the worst weekends for fatal traffic accidents so far this year.

Gardaí have named the man fatally injured when struck by a car on Saturday at Coolboy, near Kilmacrennan, Co Donegal, as Wilford Patterson, of Coolboy. He was in his 60s.

Later on Saturday, a backseat passenger was fatally injured in a collision involving two cars at Carrickarnon, Dromad, Co Louth. The 34-year-old Lithuanian woman, who has not been named, died in hospital. It is understood she had been in Ireland for just a week.

Two of the weekend fatalities were on motorbikes. Joseph Wisely (40) was killed when his motorbike was involved in a collision with a car at Cappanrush, Ballyfin, Mountrath, Co Laois, on Saturday night. He was from Rosenallis, Portlaoise.

Another motorcyclist was killed in Co Waterford on Saturday when he crashed into a wall at Moonvoy, Tramore. He has been named as Declan O'Sullivan (28), who lived at Riverview, Tramore.

Gardaí in Longford have named the young man who was fatally injured in a collision at 12.30 yesterday morning as Jaroslaw Debik (19), a Polish national with an address at Roosky, Co Roscommon. He was killed when the car he was travelling in lost control and crashed at Battery Road, Longford.

A 20-year-old Polish man appeared before Longford District Court yesterday and was charged with drink-driving. He has been remanded in custody.

Another passenger in the car at the time of the crash also appeared before Longford District Court yesterday. He was charged with stealing a wallet belonging to a garda while being being taken away in a patrol car from the crash scene. He too has been remanded in custody.

Four men and three women were in the car at the time of the accident, six of them Polish and one Portuguese. All have been working in the Longford area.

A man in his 20s remained in a critical condition in Galway last night following a two-car crash at Inverin on Saturday night. It took place on the main coast road from Galway to Carraroe.
