Today may or may not  be the first day of spring depending on who you believe but either way the weather is showing no sign of warming up.

Met Éireann has issued a severe weather warning this morning, saying the current cold snap would last until next week

Scattered hail and snow showers are forecast mainly for the north and west of the country with snowfall of up to 5cm expected in some places. However, the showers could turn up just about anywhere and the entire country can expect widespread severe frosts at night.

Some schools in the North and West remained closed today due to overnight snowfalls.

Motorists are being advised that road conditions will be dangerous. Emma Caulfield of AA Roadwatch warned motorists to take extra care over the next few days.

"Motorists should take particular care when driving overnight and in the early hours of the morning. Drivers should allow extra time for all journeys, reduce their speed and watch out for black ice on all roads, particularly in sheltered areas," she said.

The National Safety Council advised motorists to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary in the worst affected areas.
