A FIRE in a train undercarriage disrupted rail services between Galway and Dublin last evening.

A FIRE in a train undercarriage disrupted rail services between Galway and Dublin last evening.

Some 260 passengers were on the 3.05pm service when the driver received an automated alert of the fire near Athenry. The fire, under one of the six carriages, did not affect the passenger area.

Iarnród Éireann spokesman Barry Kenny said passengers got off the train, some using ladders, after emergency services put out the fire. They were taken to Athenry by bus. The train remained immobile last evening and normal service was expected to resume this morning.

Iarnród Éireann reported the incident to the Rail Accident Investigation Unit.
