Bus services catering for west and south Finglas may have to be withdrawn for an indefinite time to the more secure village area because of stone throwing incidents, SIPTU shops stewards warned yesterday. The routes affected are 40, 40A, 40B and 220.
The curtailment is likely to start on Tuesday when shop stewards in the Phibsboro garage meet to discuss the response of Dublin Bus management.
SIPTU says that since the beginning of December gangs of youths have made an area of approximately 50,000 people a "no go" area for buses. The union has already been forced to place a number of curtailments in the southern and western parts of Finglas.
"It is little short of a miracle that no one has been seriously injured in these mindless attacks," the union said in a statement.
The union also said that vandalism was costing Dublin Bus £500,000 a year. Recent incidents in Finglas had cost the company a minimum of £10,000.
