Tennis: Top seed Roger Federer began his bid for a fourth consecutive US Open title with a nonchalant 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over American qualifier Scoville Jenkins in the first round.

The world number one, going for his 12th grand-slam crown, wrapped up victory in just 92 minutes and now plays either Rainer Schuettler of Germany or Paul Capdeville of Chile.

"It always feels kind of a relief to get through the first one," Federer said in a courtside interview. "It was tough. Scoville is a good player and I'm happy to get through. Now hopefully I can relax a little."

Federer was rarely threatened on serve and broke Jenkins, the world number 319, four times reach the second round.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray made a confident start to his campaign as he raced into  the second round with a straight-sets victory over Uruguayan qualifier Pablo Cuevas.

The British number one, whose season has been on hold since injuring his right wrist in May, showed few signs of rust as he dominated proceedings on the Grandstand court at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.

Murray, who had missed both the French Open and Wimbledon during his time on the sidelines, won the match 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and 43 minutes.

His victory sets up a second-round tie against either Juan-Pablo Guzman of Argentina or Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman, who were one-set all on an outer court as the Scot wrapped things up against Cuevas.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko swept past American wildcard Jesse Levine 6-4, 6-0, 6-1 in an hour and 40 minutes on the Grandstand Court at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to ease into the second round.

He will play either Nicolas Kiefer of Germany or America's Vincent Spadea.
