MICHAEL BISHOP, the father of Irish comedian Des Bishop, died yesterday after battling lung cancer for more than a year.

MICHAEL BISHOP, the father of Irish comedian Des Bishop, died yesterday after battling lung cancer for more than a year.

Des Bishop's latest comedy tour My Dad Was Nearly James Bondwas about his father and was the subject of a documentary on RTÉ.

It achieved critical success when performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and combined stories of his father’s past with more traditional stand-up comic style material.

The RTÉ documentary, which was aired on January 27th, concluded with Des’s father joining him on stage at the Edinburgh festival last year.

Management have confirmed that the national tour of the show is to be postponed until further notice. Ticket holders have been requested to contact individual venues directly for further information.

In an interview with The Irish Timeslast summer, the comedian said the show was designed to celebrate "the heroics of fatherhood".

“I’ve wanted to tell his story since even before he got sick,” he said.

The Bishop family have asked that their privacy be respected at this time.
