A Dublin family has received a £10,000 out-of-court settlement from Aer Lingus after its members were splashed with chemicals while boarding a Birmingham-bound aircraft.

Mr Anthony Bradley (50), from Finglas West, Dublin, and his wife, Veronica (43), threatened to sue the airline last October when they and their daughter, Laura (6), were splashed.

"As we were getting on the plane in Dublin, we noticed the hose from a tanker, positioned at the rear of the aircraft, had broken loose," said Mr Bradley.

"Then a strong wind blew the substance into our faces and the faces of two other passengers. We wiped our faces as best we could, but about 15 minutes later we experienced an horrific burning sensation, and all of us suffered agonising pain."

He said he and his family were infuriated by the "couldn't-care-less" attitude of the Aer Lingus stewardesses.

Later the Bradleys were treated at hospital. They were unable to eat for two days because of the pain and general discomfort.

Aer Lingus agreed to pay the family £7,000 in cash and £4,000 in airline tickets.

"My faith in Aer Lingus is completely restored," said Mr Bradley.
