A Co Limerick family have repeated their call for an inquiry into how blood and body tissue samples collected by the MidWestern Health Board went missing following an investigation of a public health scare.

The investigation ruled out the possibility that the samples went missing due to a conspiracy. A discussion of the case was ruled out of order at yesterday's health board meeting in Limerick. The letter was sent to the board by Mr Pat Geoghegan and his wife Nuala, from Askeaton, who are seeking support in asking the Minister for Health to order a public inquiry.

They questioned the health board's role in investigating possible pollution by local industries and its failure to return part of the blood samples.

Cattle began to die from unexplained causes in Askeaton in the early 1990s and people also suffered unexplained health problems. The Geoghegans said their daughter, Amanda, suffered extreme fatigue, nausea, and pains in June, 1998.
