The number of new private cars licensed has fallen for the first time this year, following the ending of the scrappage scheme on June 30th.

The number of private vehicles fell by 0.9 per cent in July with 65 fewer new cars licensed, data released by the CSO yesterday shows. In July 6,953 new private cars were licensed compared with 7,018 in July 2010.

This is in sharp contrast to June, when there was an 11 per cent rise in private car registrations compared with June 2010 as motorists rushed to take advantage of the Government scheme.
