Eye specialists are expecting a higher than usual number of people presenting with problems on Thursday. Dr Donald Ferndes, of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin, said he expected many patients on the day following the eclipse.
"It depends on whether people take the advice being given through the media. If people do come in with sight problems, we will carry out the usual investigations.
"We will give drops to dilate the pupils and shine light in to look at the eye, but if the retina is damaged there is no immediate treatment. It can be quite disastrous," he said.
