Search and rescue at sea and coastal protection are the main beneficiaries in the Estimates. Harbour works, fish farming development, marine research and tourism angling are also identified as priorities.

In the Defence budget, a 38 per cent increase in capital spending on naval equipment will cover the cost of an eighth patrol ship, currently being built in England.

The Irish Marine Emergency Service (IMES) is to receive a 36 per cent increase to £8.76 million. Funding for IMES coastal units is up by 51 per cent to £712,000.

Funding for fisheries harbours is up 148 per cent to £7.35 million, with Killybegs, Dingle, Burtonport, Greencastle and Kilmore Quay identified as immediate priorities. The tourism angling programme will receive an 82 per cent increase in funding to £6 million.
