Florence - A federal appeals court yesterday postponed the planned execution of German national Walter LaGrand, saying use of the gas chamber in Arizona may be unconstitutional.

Arizona prison spokeswoman Ms Camilla Strongin said the 11th-hour ruling would delay the execution, which had been set for 3:00 p.m. (10 p.m. Irish time) today, in a case that has drawn calls for clemency from around the world.
