THE Taoiseach, all European Commissioners and the Cabinet are expected at a major outdoor event in Dublin's Temple Bar on July 1st to mark the beginning of Ireland's presidency of the EU.

The live televised event will begin at 9.30 p.m. and will feature a specially written piece of music by Shaun Davey, performances by The Corrs, Noel Eccles, Davy Spillane, Martin O'Connor and Ma ire Breathnach.

Less conventional Irish percussionists will perform on bones spoons and Lambeg drums. Two film makers have been commissioned to make short films for projection on a cinema screen in Meeting House Square, where the performances will take place.

This "by invitation only" event for the VIPs will be preceded by what its promoters call a "free public extravaganza" from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. on the same day.

This will feature Irish and European street performers, including a "power tool orchestra", a Spanish street theatre ensemble and a group of drummers from Waterford, Cork, Galway and Dublin.

According to the Minister of State, Mr Gay Mitchell, "this event, which will have a significant European dimension, will be a fitting start to the Irish presidency. It is appropriate that it takes place in Temple Bar, an area which symbolises the benefit of Ireland's partnership with Europe".

Both the free show, called "Streets, Squares and Spectacles", and the evening event are being produced by Temple Bar Properties.
