Inflation in individual EU countries is a matter for all member states, according to the current EU President Mr Goran Persson.

Speaking today after a meeting with the Taoiseach in Dublin, Mr Persson, who is the Prime Minister of Sweden, said that member-states should be outspoken about the risk of inflation occurring anywhere within the EU and that they are obliged to find ways to fight it. Mr Persson was responding to a question about the EU recommendation over Irish budgetary policy.

The President is visiting Dublin as part of the a tour of EU capitals in advance of the Special European summit in Stockholm in next month. Sweden currently holds the presidency of the EU and he was speaking with the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, at Government Buildings earlier today.

Mr Persson added that increasing numbers ofdiscussions were taking place regarding the economic performance of member states in the EU.

The two leaders were also discussing issues that are to be raised at the Spring summit. Of particular concern was Europe's aging population. Mr Ahern said that the aging issue was a very important one and that it was an issue that is right now in the present.

They also discussed the current state of the peace process as well as bio technology, which Mr Persson felt was an area that Europe needed to be able to compete with the US on.
