European Union foreign ministers have agreed to impose sanctions against Mr Robert Mugabe after the expulsion of the EU's chief observer of the election process in Zimbabwe.

The remaining EU monitors are also to be withdrawn from the country, it was announced this afternoon, following a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.

Meanwhile, hundreds of government supporters threw stones and smashed windows at the headquarters of Zimbabwe's opposition party in the capital today.

Police broke up the attack, but around 10,000 ruling party supporters continued their march to the British High Commission in Harare, where they accused London of supporting the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
