BARCELONA - German and other international links with the Basque separatist organisation ETA are being investigated intensively by the Spanish authorities, following the accidental discovery of an active ETA unit in Madrid, seemingly prepared to carry out a major bomb attack in the capital, reports Alex Scoot.

A small explosion in the early hours of Saturday morning in a Madrid city centre flat led local police to the discovery of bomb making equipment in a "safe house". Four suspects, one of them German, escaped.
