An environmental group has reiterated its call for the European Commission to take legal action against Ireland after work recommenced at the historic Carrickmines Castle site today.

Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE) today faxed EU Environment Commissioner Ms Margot Wallstrom, seeking her intervention.

The move follows the resumption of work today despite leaked details of the European Commission's expert report which found the Environmental Impact Study at Carrickmines was not compliant with EU regulations.

An spokesman for FIE said: "The Commission's obligation is to uphold European law ... If Commissioner Wallstrom does not do so, the matter will be brought before the European Ombudsman."

A team of Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown county council archeologists went on-site today in preparation for the knocking down of ramparts at the perimiter of the Castle ruins.
