Your notes and queries

We watched an otter swimming off Cromane Strand. He was basking in the sunshine, the picture of contentment. He would dive and reappear munching happily, probably on mussels.
Brendan Frawley
Cromane, Co Kerry

I found an insect in our kitchen today that I don't recognise.
Joe Geoghegan
Dublin

It is a hawthorn shield bug, judging by your photograph. Shield bugs, common in gardens and hedgerows, are so called because their backs are shield-shaped and have triangular designs.

Is it usual for birds of different species to share nests? A swallows' nest in my turf shed has been extended with leaves and moss, with a small opening.
Liam Fallon
Dysart, Co Roscommon

Some birds occasionally take over the nest of another bird. Your nest may be that of a house sparrow or a wren.

Two sightings of hoopoes from southern Europe. Owen Daunt of Fountainstown, Co Cork, saw two; Dermot Mowatt of Kill, Co Waterford, saw one.
