Marcus Trescothick hit a century to spearhead England's recovery in the second Test after New Zealand had progressed to a commanding total of their own at Headingley. The home side reached 231-3 before bad light stopped play.

Replying to New Zealand's impressive 409 on a wicket which was supposed to show increasing signs of uneven bounce and movement, England were expected to struggle after dismissing the tourists shortly before lunch.

But instead of New Zealand taking control of the Test, it was their attack who toiled to break England's newly-formed opening partnership with Trescothick dominating a 153-run stand with Andrew Strauss before claiming his sixth century at this level.
