Employment in banking, insurance and building societies increased by 1,600 between March 2001 and March 2002, according to the Central Statistics Office.
Employment increased by 600 in the banking sector, by 100 in the building societies sector, and by 900 in the insurance sector.
Average weekly earnings increased by 9.6 per cent in the year. This increase was made up of increases of 14.4 per cent in the banking sector, 28.8 per cent in building societies, and a decrease of 4 per cent in the insurance sector.
The quarterly (December 2001 to March 2002) figures show that:
- Employment in the banking sector decreased by 600. Employment in the building societies and in the insurance sector remained unchanged.
- The index of average weekly earnings increased by 8.4 per cent in the banking sector, and by 5 per cent for the building societies. It decreased by 4.1 per cent in the insurance sector.
- Average weekly earnings rose by 8.3 per cent in the banking sector, and by 6.3 per cent for building societies. Average weekly earnings in the insurance sector were down by 4.2 per cent.
