Elderly woman killed in level crossing collision

An elderly woman was killed when her car was in collision with a train on an unmanned railway crossing in Derry today.

An elderly woman was killed when her car was in collision with a train on an unmanned railway crossing in Derry today.

The woman in her 70's was driving along a farm track which crosses the railway line close to the Seacoast Road at Benone near Limavady when the accident happened.

The local woman was believed to be on her way to feed sheep at the time.

Her crushed car was carried yards along the track by the Derry to Belfast train travelling at 70mph.

The train was derailed, but despite its speed remained upright and none of the 34 passengers suffered injury, said police.

The train driver was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

The track at the scene of the accident was damaged and it is expected to be a number of days before the line is reopened.

Northern Ireland Railways said a temporary bus service would operate between Derry and Coleraine.

Investigations by the police, Translink and the Health and Safety Executive have been launched.
