About 26,000 Eircom customers in Dublin were without a phone service for much of today after a power outage this morning.

Eircom said the customers in the Dublin 2 and Dublin 4 areas have been affected after the outage at the Beggar's Bush telephone exchange.

The company said telephone service was restored to the "vast majority" of the affected customers by 6pm.

"Today's incident was a result of a power outage that affected the telephone exchange which caused severe disruption to residential and business customers in Dublin 2 and parts of Dublin 4. Most data and transmission networks have been restored since 1.15pm," Eircom said in a statement.

It said it expected to have all service restored by 7pm.
