Up to 18 people are feared dead after a cargo aircraft crashed in Siberia following an on- board fire, news agencies reported.

Quoting Emergencies Ministry officials, the reports say the Il-76 transporter came down near the city of Okhotsk in the Khabarovsk region, shortly after the captain told air traffic control he was making an emergency landing due to an on board fire.

The plane disappeared from radar screens shortly afterwards.

Rescue officials said they had spotted wreckage from the aircraft, and that there was little chance of saving anyone.
