TEACHER RESOURCES FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLY Old age should be a time of happiness and sharing accumulated wisdom

TEACHER RESOURCES
FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLYOld age should be a time of happiness and sharing accumulated wisdom. For many people in modern society, however, it brings loneliness and isolation.

The Friends of the Elderly transition year and CSPE programmes bring young and old together, giving young people a chance to learn life lessons from Ireland during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, but more importantly, to learn that growing old is a part of life, and that age should not be a barrier to friendship. Meanwhile, the elderly can also learn a lot from the enthusiasm and vigour of the young. SIMON COMMUNITY

At a time of rising homelessness and despair, Close to Home is a simple but effective DVD and resource pack from the Simon Community, presenting students with a persuasive case for volunteering or fundraising. The short film explains the root causes of homelessness, explores the work of the Simon Community and possible steps to reduce the risk of homelessness, and interviews people affected by homelessness.
