This is the site for the School and University Internet Awards (SUIA) competition, which is open to all full-time students in primary, second-level or third-level education in both the Republic and Northern Ireland. There is also an international section, open to full-time students worldwide, to which all Irish entries are automatically entered.
SUIA, a non-profit organisation, was established in 1999 to encourage the use of the Internet in academic institutions. It aims to further the positive use of the Internet in education, encourage increased and equal access to the Internet - especially in disadvantaged areas - and encourage Internet-based initiatives in the field of education.
However worthy its intentions, there is a very annoying aspect to SUIA's homepage in the "Click for your Language" box. While the links for English, Spanish, Italian, German and French lead to details in those languages, the links for Irish, Swedish and Dutch lead to pages saying that the translation is coming soon.
What does work very well, though, is the entry showcase section, which has links to all other entries received. The standard is pretty high, but at least it lets you know what you have to aim for. When last checked, there were surprisingly few entries.
Listing Irish entrants by county is a good idea. Maybe people in counties that currently have no entries - and there are many - will be inspired to uphold their county's pride. Entering can be done directly from the SUIA site. The £15,000 prize fund is sponsored by cable TV company NTL. Closing date is March 1st, so if you want to enter, you'd better get cracking.
