There have been demands at a range of teacher conferences recently for more PE and sporting facilities in schools. One second-level school in Co Cork recently started fund-raising for a sports hall and ancillary facilities. Midleton College has launched a "millennium project" to raise money to build a new sports hall, with a new playing surface, security fencing, parking and flood-lighting. The college's "sporting vision for the new millennium" is to involve other school communities and other sporting and cultural groups and organisations.

The school has already received "an encouragingly cautious initial response" from the Minister of Education and Science, according to a committee member.
